My vision coming into my own practice as a family lawyer and mediator has been to make separation better.

As much as it reads like an oxymoron, separation is becoming a growing part of everyday life and, rather than treat it like the drunk uncle at the Christmas party, shoving it in the corner and dealing with it only when it starts breaking glasses and shouting obscenities at your deaf grandma, I think we just need to accept it, and learn to move on. Better.

So that's what I am about. And collaborative law is a key to opening the door for drunk uncle to come on in, sit down with everyone else, and work openly, honestly, and pragmatically, to move forward. The analogy goes a bit awry from here, but you get the point.

Collaborative law is all about bringing everyone together to work out not what 'should' happen, but what will happen. We work together as a team with the same end goal - to get the family through separation and out the other side, relatively unscathed, and with a bright future ahead with the solid decisions that have been made through the process. You won't be fighting. You won't be going to court. It's kind of like sorting through the CD collection when you split up with your girlfriend in the 90s and letting her take the Silverchair albums because, as much as you love them, you know she loves them more. And you recorded them on the cassette anyway, so you can listen to them in the car.

Collaborative law is separation with heart. And I think that's how you separate better.

So let's do it. Separate better.
